Final Fantasy 7 for PC (NEW graphics overhaul!)
#13045662 - 08/13/10 10:23 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

There now exists a series of mod packs for the PC version of FF7. These don't work with the Ultima version that was released; stay away from it, it's junk. Just get the regular game. As of now I'm beginning a game of FF7 with:
  • 1280x1024 resolution (can be higher)
  • Revamped textures, NPC's, weapons, etc.
  • New party member portraits
  • New Cloud model
  • New party member models (look more modern like in Advent Children)
  • Real mp3 soundtrack, not the MIDI crap the game comes with
  • More detailed world map, including a new cloud model for the world map
  • More detailed spell animation
  • the list goes on..

Here are some screenshots:
I mean, shit! Look at the detail on the pointer hand alone! MAJOR overhaul and it looks gorgeous. Compare it to the original style:
Is anyone interested in learning how to do this? I can provide you all of the info you'll need to do this. It took me HOURS to figure out because I didn't watch the easy to follow youtube tutorials, if you pay attention it'll take you a max of 30 min or so to get yourself situated. The only issue I'm having so far is that the game's playing some of the wrong mp3's in a given scenario. Other than that it's like my prayers have been answered. This is a remake of FF7 that looks and runs GREAT.
Let me know what you think.

Well here it is anyway.. Read this first, then follow from the first step, just to get the gist of it.
I attached the torrent to a post a few posts down. While that's downloading, grab THIS patch, v1.02. Without it you can't run these mods.
The torrent is comprised of 4 discs. The first one is for installation only. Use PowerISO or a similar program and mount Disc 1 to a virtual drive. This tricks the computer into thinking you have a real CD in a physical drive. Go into My Computer and double click the drive to open it and begin the install. You want to choose the 'maximum' or full install for these mods to work. On a newer PC this takes less than a minute to install. Make sure that when you go to run the game and test it that you mount disc TWO or else it'll keep bugging you to 'Insert CD'. As previously stated, Disc 1 is just for install.
Now you wanna run the patch. Follow the instructions, it's no different than patching any other game. Just copy the files to the root directory, paste, and 'replace' when prompted so it overwrites the originals. Now the game is primed for modding.
Head over to http://www.finalfantasy7pc.com/mods/ and grab the following mods from the right:
  • Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver
  • APZ Cloud Project
  • FF7 Music Patch
  • Highwind Tool
  • Phoenix Rejuvenation Project
  • Team Avalanche’s Graphical Overhaul

Rather than type this all out, the creator of this site made YouTube tutorials on PRECISELY how to install these. Don't stray from them at all. Do EXACTLY what he says.
How to install Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver:
then install Phoenix Rejuvenation Project

next install Team Avalanche’s Graphical Overhaul, the above video shows both consecutively. Just follow his instruction.
Here's the tricky part though. You'll need to grab an OLDER version of the Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver but only for the ff7_opengl.reg file. For some reason the Graphical Overhaul program WILL NOT RUN unless you double click that .reg file and add it to the registry (it'll do it automatically, just double click and agree). That part had me pulling my hair out. If you get to this part and get the error let me know and I'll do my best to explain it.
Then you can run the Hi-Res or Low-Res overhaul, depending on which one you chose. I realize this all sounds confusing just reading this but watch the videos, it's a lot simpler when you actually go through it.
I tested the game after each mod was installed just to make sure it was working. It sucks getting all the way through it and the game won't even fucking launch. These are the main mods that make the game look shiny and new.
If all is still good till now, install the APZ Cloud Project.
and then the FF7 Music Patch

And that's pretty much it. I may experiment with some other mods later, but right now all I'm concerned about is keeping the game as close to the original without changing it, just revamping the graphics and music..
Like I said this took me HOURS to figure the fuck out but be patient, watch all the VIDEOS, and remember to grab an older version of that Aali Custom file I linked you, and ONLY run the ff7_opengl.reg file or you won't be able to run the Overhaul mod, it errors out and says, 'Aali Custom blah blah blah is not currently installed' when it really is.
I'm running this on a Windows 7 64-Bit OS and it works like a charm. Something else worth noting FOR 64-BIT USERS ONLY is that when you install the Phoenix Rejuvenation Project it doesn't default it to the Program Files (x86) folder like the rest of the game and mods did, it saves it to the regular Program Files folder. You need to cut and paste that flffdr (or whatever folder its called in the video) into the Program Files (x86) folder. If you're a 32-bit OS user disregard that last statement.
After typing all this out I realize this sounds difficult as shit but it's WELL WORTH IT if you're a fan like I am. I have the next 5 days off of work and not shit to do.. Good luck guys!

Just about, yeah. I'm still in the beginning of the game running on no sleep so I'm not too far yet, but those people are really serious about revamping the entire game and they're always releasing new mods and updates.

its kind of amazing the game has been out on PC for 10 years, you'd think they'd have a lot more done. not that I'm complaining really, but seeing the new models on the old low res backgrounds aint as pretty as it could be. any excuse for me to start this beast over again is a good one though.

Hmm, that should still work, but I found another one here. Identical to the last one but this one doesn't have PC in parenthesis. (lol oops).
And about the graphics, I hear ya about the backdrops but that's a pretty big undertaking, redoing all of the non moving art. Even the battle textures look better though. That first boss you fight in the mako reactor looked shiny as fuck, and smooth. He didn't look like a bunch of misshapen polygons, and the textre of the ground and all is improved. It's def worth the hassle of modding.

I know it's a massive job. but like i said, the game has been out for 10 years on PC. maybe more. I looked around and it doesn't seem like anyone's done much as far as cleaning up the backdrops for HD or something close.

Ignore the mods in this pack too; only use the ones mentioned in this thread. This torrent comes with a PDF strategy guide though, pretty handy. Couple that with windowed mode and you're gold.

this is pretty awesome. aside the fact I've had to download the game twice and in a minute i have to install all these mods, whcih is probably gonna be a pain in the ass..I haven't played FFVII in a few years now. it's nice to know it'll be at the least, aesthetically better.

I played it a year ago but I made the mistake of getting the Ultima version and patching it. I got sooo fucking far and was doing great when I hit an unpassable glitch and flipped the fuck out. This will be a WAY better experience. The worst part of this was figuring out that part about downloading an older version of that one mod just for one measely file, but it worked like a charm.
Like I said I'll do my best to explain it, for some reason he neglects to mention it in his video. Hell, you might not even encounter this issue!

WTF ?!??!!?!? this is blasphemy. You gotta take the game as the whole package, chibi outdated graphics and all.
I'm sorry, but so many parts in the game look silly with newer graphics.
I'm ashamed for you

Illegal operation. Are you using Widnows ME?
That is weird, it's prolly something with your OS. These forums might be able to help. http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php

Ff7 Remake Pc Release

Reddit ff7 remake

Final Fantasy VII is one of those games that you love to play even though the graphics are all outdated. But what if you could play the same old FF7 that you know and love with enhanced graphics? That's right, thanks to the dedicated hard-working people over in the Qhimm Forums there are unofficial 'patches' that you can get to enhance your FF7 experience.
Before I start I would like to let it be known that I did not create any of the mods in this instructable nor do I credit for them.
Some of the mods that I would recommend are:
1) Aali's Custom Graphics Driver (Allows you to increase the game resolution. It's also needed for most of the other mods)
2) Phoenix Rejuvenation Project (Changes most characters in the game from their blocky sprites to more lifelike ones)
3) Team Avalanche's Graphical Overhaul (Improves both 2d and 3d game backgrounds, GUI's, etc.)
There are a lot more cool mods that you can get (such as 9999 Limit Breaker, that allows your HP/MP/Damage go beyond 9999) but this instructable will only cover these four. If you want to look into more mods have a look at the Qhimm forums or go to FinalFantasy7PC .
Okay, so what you will need for this instructable is:
1) A PC. (Not a mac or Linux)
2) Software to decompress .zip files. (WinRAR is free and easy)
3) An official FF7 game for PC (Not the Ultimate version)
4) The official 1.02 Final Fantasy 7 PC Patch
